PROJECT INFO:
The Benoni Urban Design project, completed in 2016, is a testament to the transformative potential of thoughtful urban redevelopment. Located in the bustling heart of Benoni, Johannesburg, the project sought to breathe new life into public spaces, prioritizing functionality, aesthetic appeal, and community interaction. By reimagining the streetscape, the project aimed to create a vibrant urban environment that fosters both movement and moments of pause.

Key interventions included the widening of pavements to encourage pedestrian activity and the introduction of pedestrianized streets, reducing vehicular dominance and creating safe, accessible spaces for all users. Features such as parklets and landscaped urban areas provided pockets of greenery, softening the urban landscape and offering residents spaces to relax and connect. Bespoke lighting installations were strategically placed to enhance the aesthetic character while improving safety and usability during the evenings.

The design incorporated seating areas, water fountains, and other urban furniture, creating a cohesive language throughout the project area. Each element was carefully selected to reflect adaptability and resilience, ensuring the spaces could evolve with the community’s changing needs. This project exemplifies how urban design can transform public areas into inviting, multifunctional spaces that enrich the urban experience.
