UKZN CENTENARY BUILDING

TASK:
UPGRADE / CONVERSION TO UKZN CENTENARY BUILDING (COMPLETED: 2019)

PROJECT INFO:

This project is located at UKZN Howard College Campus and consists of two components, the first being the conversion of an existing unused outdoor space into a new student social space and the second being the installation of a new canopy to the main entrance of the building.

Outdoor Social Space:
The brief for this project required the transformation of an unused outdoor space into a people-centred, energized and vibrant social space with plenty of seating. In order to achieve this, various seating options were introduced into the space along with astroturf. The use of low maintenance materials such as timber and concrete and adequate bespoke lighting interspersed throughout the space ensures safety and visibility, especially at night.

External Canopy:
The existing entrance to the Centenary building did not have a covering or canopy which posed a problem for students and staff entering the building during days of inclement weather conditions. As there was sufficient space, the design of the new canopy allowed for an extensive covering which included for side seating space. A natural flow from the existing staircase to the canopy allows one to be drawn into an inviting space. The use of polycarbonate roofing panels and timber creates a softer atmosphere rather an imposing structure overhead and adequate bespoke lighting ensures that the space is sufficiently lit at night.
